Join local author, Ted Freeman, for a “deeper dive” into the history of Auburn, its founding, and the local Black community called “New Guinea.” Freeman’s writing challenges past perceptions that his ancestors—Harry and Kate Freeman—were enslaved when they arrived to co-found modern-day Auburn with John Hardenbergh in 1793. What is certain, however, is their central place not only in establishing the Black community of the new settlement, but in building it from the ground-up. The community would eventually become the chosen home of Harriet Tubman and her descendants.
